In addition to its teaching mission, OU-COM provides high-quality medical care to a service area that extends throughout Southeastern Ohio. The Community Health Programs office, through outreach efforts, facilitates the OU-COM missions of service, education and community. Our outreach provides access to health care for many who would, otherwise, not receive care in this underserved Appalachian region. .

Mobile Unit History

Community Service Programs (CSP) grew out of the Childhood Immunization Program (CHIP) that began in 1994. The multi-county CHIP program, which travels to isolated rural areas in a 40-foot van, was designed to reach children in 21 Southeast Ohio counties. As the program grew, so grew the realization that many other unmet health needs exist in our area. As a result, Community Service Programs was formed in early 1996 to help meet these needs. A second mobile unit was added in 2001, allowing additional services to be offered in Southeastern Ohio counties. Last year the Community Service Programs office at OU-COM provided thousands of dollars worth of free or low cost health care services to the residents of the area. In 2006 Community Service Programs was renamed to Community Health Programs (CHP).
